New Entry System Makes It Easier to Visit Wildlife
GOLDEN POND, KY - The Elk & Bison Prairie (EBP) in Land Between The Lakes (LBL) National Recreation Area, will be closed December 15 & 16, 2009, for the installation of a new entry gate system. The new gate will accept cash, credit cards, and new prepaid entry cards rather than only taking special tokens.
Unlike the older token system, visitors to LBL without sufficient cash on hand, will no longer have to visit the Golden Pond Visitor Center, North Welcome Station, or South Welcome Station before visiting the EBP to purchase an entry token each time.
The new prepaid cards will be available at the Golden Pond Visitor Center, North Welcome Station, and South Welcome Station; the owners of tokens can exchange them for a prepaid card at these facilities until the end of 2010. Entry to the EBP will remain $5 a car.
"The new entry system will make it easier on everyone," says Ileana Nelson, an engineer at LBL. "Visitors will have more payment options for convenience."
The EBP is an active habitat restoration project demonstrating habitat restoration for bison, elk, an other native species that were once prevalent throughout western Kentucky. Winter is an excellent time to visit, as animals are active throughout the winter season and easier to see while the leaves are off the trees.
Land Between The Lakes is managed by the Forest Service, U.S. Department of Agriculture, in partnership with "Friends of LBL", to provide public lands outdoor recreation and environmental education. We encourage visitors to review our website at www.lbl.org each season, and throughout the season, for our Calendar of Events, updates on programs and policies, and temporary trail and road closures. Additional LBL information is also available on our website or by calling 1-800-LBL-7077 or 270-924-2000. You can find out more about "Friends of LBL" at www.friendsoflbl.org.
