Land Between The Lakes Remains Closed Until Further Notice
GOLDEN POND, KY - Power and phone services have not been restored to Land Between The Lakes, LBL, National Recreation Area and many roads remain impassable or damaged. Some conditions improve daily, but remain hazardous to visitors. Until those hazards are cleared LBL will remain closed to the public. As conditions improve, new updates will be sent out to the media and posted on the LBL website www.lbl.org.
The southern portion of The Trace from Golden Pond, KY has been cleared of downed trees debris and is passable. Other roads in the southern area will remain closed until assessments have been completed and restored to save conditions. The northern half of The Trace and other roads are still considered very hazardous and will remain closed until further notice. Agency Administrator, Kathryn Harper stated, "This is unprecedented and will present long term challenges for public safety and forest health. Aerial assessments have been conducted and Forest Service Staff are working to stabilize conditions." Harper added, "We need the publics help in abiding by this closure. We understand peoples' concerns for their favorite LBL places and cemeteries, but it is imperative you do not visit LBL as access to these areas maybe dangerous and are currently closed."
On Tuesday morning, January 27, the ice storm that fell across Western Kentucky heavily impacted LBL and the surrounding area. It resulted in severe damage throughout LBL with the heaviest impacts stretching from the Tennessee State line to the north end in Lyon County, Kentucky.
