LBL Celebrates Earth Weekend April 18 -19
GOLDEN POND, KY - Come and celebrate Earth Day, the natural wonders of LBL, and the beautiful spring wildflowers found on the hill and hollows. Earth Weekend highlights several of LBL's conservation and environmental education programs. Programs are being offered at Woodlands Nature Station (NS), The Homeplace (HP), Golden Pond Visitor Center (GPVC), South Welcome Station (SWS), Central Hunter Check Station (CHCS), and Turkey Bay OHV Area throughout the weekend.
"It is always exciting to be part of a new event," stated Cindy Earls, "Friends of LBL" Special Events Coordinator, "especially one highlighting LBL's conservation education programs and the wonderful spring wildflowers that make their appearance this time of the year."
Weekend events have something for all ages-basics of organic gardening, children's earth friendly activities, recreating green, basics of fishing, and traditional herbal medicinal plants.
Saturday, Carroll Tire & Wheel Alignment from Murray, KY, will offer free tire pressure checks at CHCS. Visitors can learn about the benefits of correct tire pressure. At GPVC, Green House Recycling from Murray, KY, will offer tips on how and what to recycle.
Weekend activities also feature LBL's spectacular spring wildflowers. Dr. Edward Chester, Professor Emeritus of Biology at Austin Peay State University, will lead two wildflower walks along Bear Creek on Saturday at 10 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., exploring some of LBL's best wildflower spots and teaching hikers how to add native wildflowers to their own backyard. Wildflowers will be available for purchase at GPVC and NS gift shops this weekend. Please enjoy the sights, but do not pick any flowers-leave them for others to enjoy now and in the future.
"If you are interested in wildflowers, you do not want to miss this weekend in LBL," advised Mary Schmidt, Nature Station Interpreter. "The variety of programs this Earth Weekend makes it a great experience for the whole family!" Activities include:
