Land Between The Lakes Announces Summer Events GOLDEN POND, KY - Lookin’ for adventure this summer? Look no further, Land Between The Lakes (LBL) National Recreation Area offers outdoor exploration and festive events for the whole family!
LBL’s Summer 2009 activities celebrate the simple pleasures of playing, learning, being outdoors, and experiencing the genuine, natural surroundings the area has to offer all visitors.
As summer vacation planning gets underway, LBL invites visitors to pick up a 2009 LBL Summer Calendar at area hotels, visitor centers, LBL facilities, or on our website at www.lbl.org . Come to LBL and experience what nature has to offer here in our own backyard.
Starting off the summer season is the annual favorite, the Pickin' Party starting earlier this year, May 23 & 24, at The Homeplace. Live music, open mic, great food, and a festival atmosphere will bring the hollow to jubilant life this weekend in old-fashioned rural hospitality. The Homeplace will also offer the traditional Independence Day Celebration on July 4, featuring a visit from KY Statesman Henry Clay (funded in part by the Kentucky Humanities Council and the National Endowment for the Humanities); July 5, learn about photography in the 1800s at the 19th Century Photography seminar.
The Nature Station will be offering fun events all summer, both “oldies but goodies” and brand new programs. For those seeking an aquatic adventure, NS will again offer guided canoe excursions. These nature-oriented trips, led by staff interpreters, will allow visitors to see wildlife in their natural hot spots along the LBL shoreline. Two special canoe trips will be offered for bird enthusiasts– “Hundreds of Herons,” which will take you to an island rookery, and “Birding by Boat,” where you'll visit great birding spots only accessible from the water.
Other events returning to the NS this summer will include Nature Arts Day on June 20, Cool and Crawly Critters Fest, July 11, and the ever-popular Hummingbird Festival on August 1 & 2. Celebrate Independence Day at NS by attending special programs over the weekend, including a Family Sunset Hike on Hematite Lake Trail and a Moonlight Canoe Trip.
If your kids are regular Sherlock Holmes', bring them to one of our new programs for amateur detectives– Animal Mythbusters, June 16, Nature Sleuths, June 27, or Investigating Owls, August 22. There is so much to discover at NS this summer!
Drag boat racing returns to the waters near LBL. This season, the Kentucky Drag Boat Association Races at Pisgah Bay are scheduled for June 13-14, July 11-12, and August 1-2. If dry land is more your speed, be sure to join us for LBL's Primitive Rodeo and Grand Jubilee at Wranglers Campground July 17-18.
After spending a fun filled day in the hot sun, come enjoy a cool show at the Golden Pond Planetarium. Starting May 23, enjoy Summer Nights , a variety of indoor/outdoor star programs each Saturday night through September 5.
Load the RV or pack the tent, bring the bikes or fuel up the boat, and experience LBL from every angle. So what are you waiting for? Come outside and play!
LBL offers a variety of programs throughout the summer that are ideal for home educators. For more information on these programs, visit the Calendar of Events at www.lbl.org .
