LBL Honors 16th Annual National Public Lands Day

GOLDEN POND, KY - Saturday, September 26, Land Between The Lakes (LBL) National Recreation Area honors National Public Lands Day (NPLD), our nation's largest one-day volunteer event for public lands.

On NPLD, LBL will have opportunities for volunteers to come out and participate in a shoreline clean-up or a trail maintenance project. Registered volunteers will receive a one-day pass for themselves and immediate family to visit LBL's day-use facilities including Woodlands Nature Station, The Homeplace, Golden Pond Planetarium, and the Elk & Bison Prairie.

It is recommended, but not necessary, to call and register for volunteer work early. Large groups must register prior to September 26. To register for either the shoreline clean-up or trail maintenance, call Emily Schmadeke at 270-924-2007 between 9am and 4pm, Monday through Friday. If you do not register early for the shoreline clean-up, you can check-in at North Welcome Station, South Welcome Station, or Golden Pond Visitor Center between 9am and 12noon. For those who want to work on the trails project, but did not register early, you will need to sign in at Moss Creek Day-Use Area parking lot at 8am. Volunteers should bring a lunch and dress for out door work.

"National Public Lands Day is one of the most inspiring ways to give back to the land," said Emily Schmadeke, Volunteer Coordinator for "Friends of LBL". "It is an opportunity to say thank you to our volunteers and that we appreciate the time they donate throughout the year to make LBL a cleaner, safer, and more enjoyable place for everyone."

"This is a great opportunity for families, and especially groups, who want to demonstrate their appreciation for the environment," said John Rufli, Executive Director of "Friends of LBL". "It's a tradition to start for families or groups and gives you the satisfaction of making a contribution to your community."

Land Between The Lakes is managed by the Forest Service, U.S. Department of Agriculture, in partnership with "Friends of LBL", to provide public lands outdoor recreation and environmental education. We encourage visitors to review our website at www.lbl.org each season, and throughout the season, for our Calendar of Events, updates on programs and policies, and temporary trail and road closures. Additional LBL information is also available on our website or by calling 1-800-LBL-7077 or 270-924-2000. You can find out more about "Friends of LBL" at www.friendsoflbl.org.
