LBL Celebrates Wolf Week October 11-17

GOLDEN POND, KY - Land Between The Lakes (LBL) National Recreation Area will observe Wolf Week, October 11-17, at Woodlands Nature Station (NS).

The NS participates in the Red Wolf Recovery Program, a captive breeding program for the endangered red wolf. Wolf Week at LBL is a great time to come out and learn more about this important and rare animal. Fun, educational programs will be featured throughout the week for people of all ages.

"Red wolves were once declared officially extinct in the wild. Thanks to recovery efforts, they have been reintroduced into a wildlife refuge in North Carolina. Red wolves are still designated as a critically endangered species. Wolf Week is an opportunity to learn about these amazing creatures and their recovery," said Carrie Szwed, Public Programs Coordinator at the NS. "It gives us a chance to appreciate wolves for their intrinsic value and for their role as top predators that help maintain balance within habitats." According to Emily Scott, president of the Red Wolf Coalition in North Carolina, it is important that we all give our support and attention to endangered species such as the red wolf, so their numbers continually grow and increase the population.

Wolf Week is also a time to dispel some of the common myths people have about wolves. "One of the myths we will discuss is that wolves are wicked, like the characters in fairy tales such as Little Red Riding Hood," added Szwed. "People often think predators are undesirable because they kill other animals, but they are an integral part of wild ecosystems."

Visitors to the NS will have an opportunity to view captive red wolves during special programs designed for Wolf Week and learn more about this rare animal and its comeback from the brink of extinction.

All Wolf Week programs are free with NS admission. Programs throughout the week will include:

Sun., Oct. 11 @ 1-4pm Howlin' Fun Canine Crafts
Mon., Oct. 12 @ 2:15pm Who's Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf
Tue., Oct. 13 @ 2:15pm Tracking Our National Treasures
Wed., Oct. 14 @ 2:15pm A Southern Wonder: Red Wolves
Thu., Oct. 15 @ 2:15pm Back from the Brink
Fri., Oct. 16 @ 2:15pm Endangered Means In DANGER!
Sat., Oct. 17 @ 11am Wolves on the Prowl Games
